DNC changes debate rules, opening path for Bloomberg to qualify
News that the Democratic National Committee would change its qualifications for the ninth primary debate — essentially eliminating the grass-roots donor requirement and opening up a path for billionaire Mike Bloomberg to make the debate stage — prompted an immediate pushback from several Democratic candidates.
. “But on the list, without question, is May 29, 2019 — when the donor threshold was raised to 130k. That’s all I will say about this today.”, “Billionaire Bloomberg just bought the @DNC. #PayToPlay.” Former Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, the only remaining African American candidate in the Democratic field, said Friday he understood there had to be a “winnowing.”Buttigieg, who has not qualified for the Feb. 19 debate yet under the new rules, told reporters before a town hall in Council Bluffs, Iowa, that he still believed he would make the stage.
Under the new rules, to qualify for the Feb. 19 debate, a candidate would need to have been allocated at least one pledged delegate from Iowa or New Hampshire; or have hit 10 percent in four qualifying polls between Jan. 15 and Feb. 18. Tom Vilsack, who has also told voters that Biden could win over moderates and some Republicans, asked Gerdes to hold his sign higher as the former governor explained why he endorsed Biden.
“I don’t really care how long it takes, because we have a constitutional duty,” Klobuchar said. “My view is, the people of Iowa and beyond will understand: I’m in the arena. I have a job to do. And that job involves getting to the truth … I just say, bring it on. Because I just have faith in the people of the country to actually want someone with the experience of standing up and not just saying, ‘Oh, turn the channel and watch some cartoons.
