iOS 15.2: Apple’s ‘Shock’ Decision Will Change Your iPhone Forever
Apple confusingly announced both updates at the same time, as they acknowledged. While both have child safety in mind, which we can all agree is an area where much,Client-side photo scanning opens a door to government interference in what’s being flagged and undermines the perceived security of what happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone. Critics were quick to point out that governments—foreign and domestic—would see this as an opportunity to search for more than CSAM.
As EFF has warned, “it’s impossible to build a client-side scanning system that can only be used for sexually explicit images sent or received by children... Even a well-intentioned effort to build such a system will break key promises of the messenger’s encryption itself and open the door to broader abuses.”End-to-end encryption secures the transportation of content from your device to somewhere else—in messaging, that is obviously someone else’s device.
When you open an encrypted messenger—iMessage or WhatsApp or Signal—you need to feel secure, that you’re operating inside a protected enclave that includes the app, the transportation layer, and the receiving app on the other side. As soon as the app includes some form of monitoring, however well-intentioned, everything changes.
This is an exceptionally sensitive subject area, but as Jake Moore—a former police digital forensics expert, tells this week’s STC, “my worry is where does this stop. It starts with this, which gets brownie points because it’s a good thing. Who wouldn't want to look after our children? But then it continues into other avenues that can get quite dangerous... Where does it stop—it could all go wrong.
I asked the team whether they expected to defeat Apple’s eventual solution. Apple’s algorithm is not public,” they told me, “so we were not able to verify their claims... This research shows that what perceptual hashing aims to achieve is difficult task with hard trade-offs. None of the five algorithms that we tested were robust to [our] attack... It is probable that current technologies used for cloud scanning are relatively easy to defeat.
“The main message of this research,” Imperial told me, “is that claims of robustness and trade-offs need to be evaluated, not taken at face value, especially for invasive solutions such as client-side scanning.” A warning that’s just as valid for iMessage.
