Two legs of the Intelligentsia Cup have been held annually in West Dundee and Elgin for the last half dozen years. This year, the West Dundee event will be held on Friday, July 22 and Elgin’s takes place a week later on Friday, July 29.
“Last year was the biggest it’s been, with more than 2,500 spectators, 250 professional racers and more than 800 other racers. We’re expecting at least as many cyclists and 3,500 attendees this time,” Maureen Himmel said of the West Dundee event, which this year will be held Friday, July 22. Elgin’s takes place a week later on Friday, July 29.Himmel and some of her neighbors got involved in the event after hearing the 10-day racing series would be happening near their homes in 2016.
Among her fondest memories is teaching a group of Australians the game of corn hole and befriending cyclist Ryan DeWald from Reading, Pennsylvania, who heads a pro team. DeWald has Type 1 diabetes and is an advocate for its cure and treatment. Returning for another year will be the family bike parade, which steps off at 6:15 p.m. in front of St. James Episcopal Church, 516 Washington St.
The race is held in honor of Dennis Jurs, an avid bicyclist who died in May 2015 after being struck by an SUV in the Hampshire area, where he lived. Jurs’ death led to the creation of a state law that mandates bicyclists receive the same right-of-way protections as motorists.
