U.S. officials on Aug. 16 for the first time declared an official water shortage for the massive Lake Mead reservoir, triggering supply cuts to parts of the drought-stricken Southwest, as 10 Western governors appealed for federal drought disaster aid.
Arizona’s allocation of water from the Colorado River is to be cut by 18% for the water year beginning on Oct. 1, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said. Reductions will also be levied on Nevada and Mexico, which will receive 7% and 5% less from the river, respectively. The move is the result of the federal agency projecting that the water level at Lake Mead at the start of next year will be around 1,066 feet above sea level, 9 feet below the official trigger for a shortage. The Colorado River Aqueduct is seen in Hayfield Lake, California, United States May 18, 2015.
