South Alabama made just enough plays late to escape with a 27-20 victory at Southern Miss on Saturday.
South Alabama tacked on another touchdown with 1:53 left when Caullin Lacy took a speed sweep pass 32 yards to the end zone. Southern Miss kicked a field goal with 13 seconds left, but the Jaguars recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. The Jaguars then temporarily lost starting quarterback Carter Bradley to a left arm injury late in the first half. Bradley was hit hard after throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Wayne, and originally stayed in before being pulled in favor of Desmond Trotter for the final series of the half.
McReynolds, a freshman from Mobile, finished the day with 189 all-purpose yards. He had 100 rushing on 15 carries, 66 on three receptions and 23 on kickoff returns.South Alabama played the first half without starting free safety Jalen Jordan, who sat out due to a targeting suspension that carried over from last week. The Jaguars then lost replacement starter Rickey Hyatt to targeting in the first quarter.
