Houts has the bearing of someone who’s found the very seat of her person—over drinks at her neighborhood bar in Williamsburg, she wavers on and off the record, talking shit openly but constructively, always leading into a larger point, never whittling down into a personal smear. Add a sketch pad and burgeoning online presence, and you’ve got pop-fashion-culture’s best-case scenario of its worst nightmare—someone who mocks them in a way they can handle .
She works both sides of the fashion machine. Her work is about the creating, and the unraveling, of modern female identity, specifically in the young, urban, and stylish sphere. In her illustrations, girls gobble “bowl”-style entrees over their desks, post cryptic but sexy selfies, or “curate” altars to Didionesque Cali cool in embroidered tunics. And the more everyone claims to get it, the higher Houts’s eyebrows arch in suspicion.
Her fans don’t seem to take the insults personally, even when they accept they’re the persona being insulted. In fact, they revel in it. The comments that roll in for her posts are sometimes expository, tagging a friend, telling them to follow Houts. But they mostly act as a colossal and concerted virtual land rush, with hundreds of claimants all staking out a post with their flag, “ME.”
