The Colts made it clear against the Vikings that they will run the ball whether they have an All-Pro back or not, and it contributed to the collapse.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Colts came into Minnesota with the same plan they have every week: run Jonathan Taylor until the wheels fall off.
On the first drive of the game, Taylor took his first touch on a screen pass up the left sideline before he was rolled out of bounds. The All-Pro running back then jogged to the bench to have his ankle examined, the same one that's kept him hobbled off and on all season long. The Colts taped the ankle heavily, but he just couldn't get it to fire right, and the Colts ruled him out for the game.
The Colts ran the ball 43 times Saturday, compared to just 33 pass attempts for Matt Ryan. They called for 37 designed runs to Taylor's backups, Deon Jackson and Zack Moss, in a game where a Pro Bowl running back on the other side in Dalvin Cook saw just 17 carries. The Colts climbed to a 33-0 halftime lead in ways that had little to do with their offense. They scored a touchdown on a blocked punt that JoJo Domann returned and another on a Julian Blackmon pick-six. They did have 209 yards, but they settled for three Chase McLaughlin field goals.
With fewer than four minutes remaining, Jackson ran into a pile and had the ball punched out. After the game, he was self-reflective and inconsolable. The avalanche came fast and hard. The Colts were outscored 39-3 after halftime, with Cook and Jefferson making explosive play after explosive play, a pulse Indianapolis couldn't answer. The Colts have been notably run-heavy since Saturday arrived as the interim coach five games ago. It's what feels most natural to a former 14-year center who hadn't worked in an NFL coaching role before.
