The Colts switched to quarterback Nick Foles in search of a spark and downfield passing game. They found neither.

Frustrated by the offense’s inability to move the ball, interim coach Jeff Saturday turned the ball over to Foles, the veteran who had played just two snaps this season prior to Monday night.

Foles did try to push the ball downfield more, but he looked like the afterthought he’s been on the Colts depth chart for most of the season. The Chargers defense has been one of the league’s worst against the run this season, giving up 145.6 yards per game on the ground heading into the Monday night game, a mark that ranked 28th in the NFL.

Indianapolis did not have its superstar running back, Jonathan Taylor, who was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week because of a high ankle sprain, and Taylor’s absence likely played a role in the Colts going away from the run-heavy approach they’d previously used under Saturday. And that fact was once again on display on Monday night. The Indianapolis defensive line made life tough on Justin Herbert, sacking him four times, forcing a critical fumble and hurrying Herbert into a rushed third-down throw early that linebacker Zaire Franklin deflected into the waiting hands of rookie free safety Rodney Thomas II.
