Lines are common outside Two Ladies Kitchen, as people commonly pick up the mochi for special events and omiyage to take home to others.In Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, the hole-in-the-wall mochi shop Two Ladies Kitchen produces confections that rival any other popular dessert treat. I would even go so far as to say it has one that’s just as good as, or better than, a chocolate-covered strawberry.
“When people think of Hilo, they think of, you know, ‘I gotta go to Two Ladies Kitchen,’” Emerald Tuares, co-owner of Two Ladies Kitchen, tells SFGATE. Both former employees, she and Clyde Ebanez bought the mochi shop four years ago from one of the founders, Nora Uchida, who was ready to retire. The hole-in-the-wall mochi shop Two Ladies Kitchen is in the middle of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii.Tuares worked at Two Ladies Kitchen for seven years prior to the purchase. She was a full-time confectioner’s assistant and had worked closely with Uchida. “I would say she’s like a second mom to me,” Tuares says.
Two Ladies Kitchen has 30 different flavors of mochi for purchase that range from butter mochi to grape and peanut butter.“We don’t have a machine making these and we just pack it and sell it,” says Tuares. “Our mochi is made from scratch. Some of our fillings are made from scratch. The azuki bean [paste] that we put around our strawberries, as well with the mochi, is made from scratch.
