Israel is hitting Gaza with airstrikes to take out Hamas officials and infrastructure. But the group operates a huge network of underground tunnels across the stripIsrael is on the cusp of an armed military incursion into the Gaza Strip to battle Hamas militants who slaughtered hundreds of civilians this past weekend in a series of ruthless surprise attacks.
Now, ahead of Israel's massive ground assault as the bombs continue to fall, MailOnline explores the 'Gaza Metro'...A Palestinian fighter from the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement, gestures inside an underground tunnel in Gaza in this August 18, 2014 file photo Moment BBC reporter falls to his knees and weeps while reporting inside Gaza hospital as he describes 'seeing things I can never unsee' - before his cameraman also breaks down in tears
The first Hamas tunnels were built in 2007 between the Gaza Strip and Egypt and were designed for smuggling consumer goods to bypass the Israeli blockade. The underground network now branches dozens of miles through the Gaza Strip reaching the towns of Khan Younis, Jabalia, and the Shati refugee camp. They also stretch into Israel.
Israel has long struggled to wipe the system out, despite top of the range military and intelligence equipment. But others are well constructed, reinforced and large enough for troops to sprint through or move contraband. Rockets fired by Hamas into Israeli territory and by the IDF into the Gaza Strip then formally sparked the seven-week conflict in July 2014.
In 2015, the Islamist group started using heavy machinery, including bulldozers and tractors, as well as engineering tools to accelerate construction of the tunnels. Palestinian children wounded in Israeli strikes are brought to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023
