For the workers who have spent the last seven years underground, reaching the tunnel has meant spending hours of their lives tramping up and down 200 or so steep, sheer steps. At the bottom of the vast shaft sits the seven-metre-wide main tunnel where, sometime in the next 18 months, a billion litres of rainwater and raw sewage will come rushing through.
It’s the need to clean up the Thames that is behind this mega project, already more than seven years in the making.
