Inside Lancashire's care homes where residents' shouts for help fall on deaf ears as carers eye up escape from industry
A row has broken out over calls for a ‘National Care Service’ following claims of poor working conditions in care homes.
“What's going to happen is care homes are going to close; I can see us being in a situation where care homes are closing because they can't get the packages and the support from the government. All the government and the regulator do is criticise and name and shame and they're not helping." "More than half of care workers employed in the private sector receive under £100 a week if they take time off sick, with many getting nothing at all." She continued: “Whilst terms are better for those in the public sector, the threats to council budgets from the recent Autumn Statement shows that this sector along with many others, will face demands on already stretched resources.
Conservative Lancashire County Councillor Graham Gooch, cabinet member for adult social care and County Councillor for South Ribble West, said the investment companies owned much else apart from care homes and that the same big care home companies had 'little presence in Lancashire. He said: "The vast majority of our 420 care homes are small, family run businesses and such a flagrantly misleading statement is an insult to these hardworking people.
