Shooting Jake Gyllenhaal during the day in the middle of Times Square was one of the most adrenaline-pumping shoots I’ve ever done. The concept was to take Jake into public places all around New York City. We went to Economy Candy, which was just filled with kids buying candy. We went to Katz’s Deli and ordered him a hot dog and had him stand on a chair, and everybody clapped.
Then we headed for Times Square. It was a bit nerve-racking. It’s like, will the people come out? Will people recognize him? Is it going to be a mob scene? We had one security guard, silly us. We got to Times Square. We took him out into the middle. Peggy got on an apple box and started taking pictures. Soon everyone swirled around.
The girls kind of came up close and center, and we directed them to get closer to Jake and not be afraid. Can you imagine visiting New York from out of town and seeing Jake Gyllenhaal in Times Square? It’s a dream come true. Celebrities really do exist in the heart of Manhattan. Jake was such a trooper during this whole shoot, and of course, on top of it, we needed to show the clothes, which were very cool, urban New York clothes like trench coats, leather jackets, and casual suits.
I’ll never forget this shoot and that smile on Jake’s face in the middle of Times Square when he was basically adored and enamored by so many people who had visited from so many different places.
