Two bands, two 20-year anniversary shows, one very busy Ben Gibbard at Madison Square Garden
, with electronic guru Jimmy Tamborello and alt-darling Jenny Lewis. Their skittering, low-budget release was the sleeper indie-tronica hit of the decade, eventually going platinum on the strength of its heartsleeve love tune “Such Great Heights,” which has been covered roughy a million times since.
The two-hour show was split in half, with Death Cab’s “Transatlanticism” performed in its entirety, then a 15-minute, Broadway-like intermission, then a return for The Postal Service’s “Give Up.” The show’s pacing also forged a more sensible dynamic arc, as the austere, ambient and guitar-forward rock of “Transatlanticism” — a generally stoic and introspective project — gave way to the playful thumps and claps of “Give Up,” allowing the crowd to dance and bop.The Postal Service lead vocalist Ben Gibbard performs during the show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.
