The tunnel has a fascinating history
A Scottish photographer has shared eerie photos of an"empty and derelict" train tunnel that was at one time used as an air raid shelter.to snap the spooky pictures of the Scotland Street Tunnel, which is a long-disused railway tunnel that ran between Scotland Street Station in the north of the city and the Canal Street terminal station in the south. The former was situated where King George V Park is today, while the latter is now approximately the site of the Princes Mall.
While the tunnel was expensive and required years of hard work to construct, it was only in service for 21 years. This is because by this time, the North British Railway company had launched a new route that served the north of Edinburgh more efficiently.after, the tunnel saw new use as the home of the Scottish Mushroom Company. Hundreds of mushroom beds were used to cultivate the crop up until the 1920s, at which time the company became bankrupt following a parasite infection.
Taking to the Abandoned Around The World Facebook group, the urban explorer who captured the images commented:"Today Scotland Street Tunnel lies empty and derelict. The north portal, in good condition, can be clearly seen on the edge of King George V Park, but the south portal was destroyed when the Waverley Market shopping centre was built in the early 1980s.
