Inside Big Sean's plan to jump-start entrepreneurship in Detroit:

Big Sean, Big Bank: The Detroit-born hip-hop star has teamed up with Ally Financial to bring dozens of young entrepreneurs to his hometown.Growing up in Detroit, Big Sean learned how to make mixtapes as a teenager and released his first platinum album at age 23. But lessons on how to handle the fruits of his labor ca“Financial literacy isn’t really taught so much in school as it should be,” he explains.

To boost the next generation of entrepreneurs, Big Sean hosted a competition called Moguls In The Making in Detroit over the weekend, bringing in 10 teams of five college students for a-like challenge. In addition to coming up with ideas to tackle education, employment and real estate issues in the city, contestants met with local business leaders and attended mentoring sessions.

A squad from Florida A&M—Livi Grant, Keishon Smith, Nalani Kelley-Marsh, Emmanuel Dawson and Earl Perry—won the competition. Each team member received $5,000 in scholarship money, an Apple laptop and an internship at Ally Financial, which partnered with Big Sean’s Sean Anderson Foundation and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to put on the event.

“Another big draw of this program for us is hopefully attracting a lot of these students who want to come here and live and start businesses and help be a part of the solution of the city going forward,” says Ally’s marketing chief, Andrea Brimmer. “The rebirth of the city has been amazing.” Detroit has indeed made a great deal of progress of late: Household income is on the rise, and job growth has been strong as the number of startups has
