Indianapolis' homicide count for 2022 tallied lower than recent years, but still hasn't reached pre-pandemic levels.
At least 226 people were killed in the city during 2022, according to the latest data from Indianapolis police. Of those, at least 210 people died in criminal homicides, which does not include accidental or self-defense killings. The number may change if a victim dies from their injuries in 2023.the city’s deadliest on recordOn paper, the number of homicides in the city this year is trending down.
The last time Indianapolis recorded fewer than 200 homicides was 2019. That year, Indianapolis had a slight dip in homicides, recording 173 killings – 154 of them criminal. In 2018 the city had 179 homicides, 159 of them being criminal.Taylor said the department plans to keep up the momentum next year when it comes to lowering the homicide count further.
The department is down more than 200 officers, he said, despite the city approving increases in their budget for more. In the last budget cycle, the city authorized the department to hire up to 1,843 sworn officers. “In the past we may have wanted those kinds of numbers, but we didn’t have the budget to do it,” Taylor told IndyStar. “We have the budget to pay for all those officers. We don’t want that to go to waste. We’re going to make sure we get top, qualified people to fill those positions.”
