Indian Prairie School District 204 is seeking Russian translators and learning materials to assist the large number of new students coming from Ukraine, officials said this week.
Because of the influx, Russian is now the 10th most-spoken language in the district outside of English and students who speak Russian now represent 2% of those enrolled in the English Language Learning program, ELL Coordinator Traci Salek told the school board Monday.Although the exact number of Ukrainian students was not disclosed, the district saw its overall ELL enrollment jump from 3,072 in the 2021-22 academic year to 3,413 in this year, she said.
Teachers and staff also use free online programs and apps, such as Google Translate, to interact with students, Salek said. Many of the students are grade-school age and attend White Eagle and Arlene Welch elementary schools in Naperville, she said.
