India has administered one billion Covid-19 vaccines—with about 31% of the adult population getting two doses—second only to China in the total number of shots given
NEW DELHI—India said it had administered one billion Covid-19 vaccines, hitting a milestone in a once-faltering campaign and signaling that the country could begin allowing more vaccine exports soon.
From administering around two million doses a day in May, the vaccination rose to an average of 7.9 million a day in September. This month daily vaccinations have been around five million, according to government data. The coronavirus pandemic has taken a brutal humanitarian and economic toll on India. More than 450,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the country, according to government data, but many experts say the actual toll of the disease is much higher. Indiain April and May, driven by the Delta variant. With new daily cases topping 400,000 on some days, the country’s healthcare system was overwhelmed.
Mr. Jameel said India was unlikely to get hit by another serious wave unless a dangerous new variant emerged. India has been aided by the fact that a substantial portion of the population has already been exposed to the virus, he said, along with the quickening pace of vaccinations. “As India’s needs are met, going forward there will be a generous stockpile of vaccines for exports,” said V.K. Paul, who leads the health team at the National Institution for Transforming India, a government think tank that has helped lead India’s vaccination drive.
