The race, which features two conservatives competing in the general election, is likely the most expensive in Utah’s history.

Mike Lee leads independent Evan McMullin by more 65,000 votes in what has been the closest U.S. Senate competition Utah has seen in decades. The split, as of 9:55 p.m., is 54% for Lee to 43% for McMullin.
If Lee pulls off a win, securing his third term in the Senate, Republicans would draw one seat closer to capturing a majority in the lawmaking body. Lee gathered with other Republicans at the swanky Hyatt Regency — the newest addition to downtown Salt Lake City’s skyline — while McMullin and his supporters came together at a theater in Taylorsville.
At the campaign party for McMullin — whose run relies on an attempt to bring together what he called a “cross-partisan coalition” of Republicans, Democrats and independents — his supporters were heard cheering for both Republican and Democratic candidates’ victories as they watched a CNN livestream of nationwide election results.
