, that I founded more than 30 years ago. We have been in Ukraine since the start of the war, drawing on our long experience of delivering medical aid across a range of humanitarian crises, including supporting the surgeons of Sarajevo for the duration of the brutal conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
We are doing the same in Ukraine. The wounded from the frontline in the east are moved westwards on an evacuation train to the emergency hospital in Lviv, where we have a team based in the surgical unit. Our patients are hundreds of miles from their homes and so not just wounded, but homeless; as are their relatives who sit beside them in the day and lie alongside them at night.
I retraced their journey from the east, through the recently retaken city of Kharkiv, and on to Staryi Saltiv, a small village, where we now provide the only healthcare clinic to this isolated community. Wars not only kill directly, but indirectly by destroying the basic health care we all need to survive.
