It is imperative that we do all we can to reduce the occurrence of highway-rail incidents in Pennsylvania and across the U.S.
Key is more education to improve behavior at these junctions where railroads, cars and/or pedestrians interact. Public-private investments to upgrade, close, or separate roadways and pathways from the railroad right-of-way can also make a difference. International Level Crossing Awareness Day, or ILCAD, is being held in June to help with public outreach. The advocacy campaign emphasizes the need for new technologies, enforcement to prevent trespassing, and community outreach to make people aware of safety risks around train tracks.This starts with state and local leaders helping spread the message. At the same time, state and local leaders in Pennsylvania should make use of available resources.
