Author Laurie Woolever speaks on the process behind her new book about Anthony Bourdain's life and legacy, how she chose which perspectives to include, and what she hopes readers take away from it
, Eric Ripert, and Anderson Cooper, or the publishing contacts he cultivated over 20-plus years of writing. Because of the way the information is presented, offers the reader an opportunity to draw singular conclusions about who the man himself was or, at least, how he related to those around him.
Dan Halpern actually found someone to interview me and I went through that process. But when it came time to assemble everything, I just didn’t find a place where my own observations or recollections were terribly different from anyone else’s. By virtue of being the author, my decisions are on every page.
I would never presume to speak for Tony or say what he might think or feel because he was so unpredictable in some ways. With that being said, I did try to bear in mind the fact that he was very deliberate about creating a certain image and about what he did and didn’t share. He wasn’t someone who only wanted to show you the shiny, polished side. He was willing to point out his own failures and shortcomings and not live up to the world’s ideals.
As far as people not wanting to overwhelm him, I think that speaks to this lifelong awkwardness and shyness and lack of ease in the world that people around him picked up on. Working for him for so long, I always got the sense that he was on his way someplace else. Even if he had just arrived somewhere, he wanted to get whatever he was doing over quickly so he could be onto the next thing or be alone.
It’s a very emotionally charged book, particularly because of the circumstances of his death. What was the impact of writing and talking about that?
