City officials have cited a shortage of electricians for a backlog that stretches into the thousands
The city is spending a $3.5 million grant to replace old wiring in some of those streetlights, and it is contracting with independent electricians to boost staffing. As of last month, a light going out takes an average of 277 days, the city said. Responding to streetlights that run during daylight hours takes 211 days to fix, and repairing poles that have been hit by cars or otherwise damaged are repaired the most quickly, at 103 days.
City officials also incorporated a new algorithm that does away with the oldest-first response to repair requests in favor of a system that factors in crime rates, historic service levels and proximity to schools. Scripps Ranch may have scored lower in priority under the adjusted algorithm. “The last two years have been an interesting lesson in the ‘effectiveness’ of San Diego city government, not to mention the self-congratulatory Scripps Ranch Civic Association,” he said.
“The issue of inoperable streetlights and security lights is not a SR Community Park issue ,” Ilko wrote. “There are other parks like Spring Canyon Park and the SCRA Community Center with security lights out for 2-plus years.”
