In phone calls home, Russian soldiers in Ukraine tell loved ones of life on the front, including the killing of civilians and the looting of homes.

A manufacturing plant in the small city of Lima, Ohio, is playing a critical role in the effort to arm Ukraine in its effort to beat back Russia.Leonid: “Some people are so scared that they are ready to harm themselves just to leave.”

Leonid returned to Russia in May, badly wounded but alive. He told his mother Russia would win this war.Ivan dreamed of being a paratrooper from the time he was a boy, growing up in a village at the edge of Siberia. He used to dress up in fatigues and play paintball with friends in the woods. Ivan ended up in Bucha, where he called his mother, who said she was afraid the phone might be tapped.Russian forces retreat from the city in Ukraine, leaving behind corpses and live mines.Ivan: “Oh, come on, I‘m not charging around.”Ivan: “We will kill if we have to.”Mother: “I understand you. I’m so proud of you, my son! I don’t even know how to put it. I love you so much. And I bless you for everything, everything! I wish you success in everything. And I’ll wait for you no matter what.

Ivan tells his mother of Ukrainian resistance backed by U.S. help; she says he has her blessing to “kill them all.” It’s not clear what military unit Maxim is in, but he makes calls from the same phone as Ivan, on the same days.
