As the number of coronavirus cases in New York skyrockets, medical professionals are being faced with difficult choices—'The numbers are dismal”
of proper protective equipment. The medical workers I spoke with told a similar story to an even greater extreme, describing an atmosphere similar to Italy’s as the situation in New York continues to deteriorate.
The age range of patients being hospitalized, too, is far more diverse than early reports might have indicated. “It’s a mix of ages. I saw a one-year-old today. I have intubated people from their 30s to their 70s,” said the anesthesiologist. “One healthy, young patient who I intubated is worsening. She had no risk factors, no travel. She is fighting for her life. No one is safe.”
The cardiologist in New York City described the scene as “crowded, patients anywhere and everywhere. The air just feels different, thick with anxiety. I don’t give the usual hugs to my colleagues; I wave from a distance. When I’m getting a report for a consult, my first questions are not about their chest pain but whether they have shown signs of coronavirus or if they’re being tested or quarantined.
A nurse administrator who oversees nine hospitals in the New York area said she is doing her best to replenish supplies, but she’s hitting major roadblocks. “We tried to get ahead of it,” she said. “Typically I can call a supply chain, but there was an allocation problem. [It’s] like when someone goes to the grocery store and takes all the toilet paper—that’s what happened in health care.”
