As nighttime falls in Santiago, peaceful protesters stream home and young men with bandannas covering their faces emerge to wreak havoc
SANTIAGO, Chile—As nighttime falls, the peaceful protesters who have taken over the streets of this capital stream home, shopkeepers quickly close businesses, and young men with bandannas covering their faces emerge to wreak havoc.
The pattern has played out through some of the biggest demonstrations to hit Chile in decades. They start out peacefully, with hundreds of thousands of people carrying signs and singing songs to protest grievances from poor health care to meager pensions.
