“We wanted to make a hub that simultaneously runs as a hotel, but also acts as a space to showcase art, a stage for creation, a meeting point. A sensual and mysterious townhouse of sorts,” says Eftihia Stefanidi of Shila.
For years, Athens was considered a layover for outsiders who opted to forgo an overnight stay in the city on their way to the. Some travelers would perhaps spend a night simply to check the Acropolis off their bucket list, departing shortly after that visit. Despite its historical gravitas, Athens has often been overlooked—cultural buffs head to Rome and vacationers to the Greek Islands.
“[After Documenta 14] there’s been a surge in international artists moving their studios to Athens,” says Eftihia Stefanidi of, a bohemian hotel and member’s club in a neoclassical townhouse that opened in the summer of 2020, which she co-runs with New York-based entrepreneur Shai Antebi. Contemporary galleries have opened by the dozens, luring their own international networks to the scene.
While Shila is tucked away in a small guest house on a quiet street in the upscale Kolonaki neighborhood, its new sister property,, is located in Athens’ Psirri neighborhood in the heart of cultural downtown. The neighborhood itself provides a view of the city’s past and present, where the Acropolis and ancient Agora blend harmoniously with the city’s galleries, designer shops and stylish bars and restaurants.
All of Mona’s 20 rooms feature ethereal cotton curtains, velvet upholstery, and an abundance of natural light set against the backdrop of exposed concrete. Some feature patios and balconies, some resemble loft apartments with added work spaces.
