City of Leon Valley sues owner of apartments; alleges ‘unsanitary, dangerous and illegal conditions’
In a rare move, the city of Leon Valley is suing the owner of the Vista del Rey Apartments in an effort to force it to make repairs.tenants of the 453-unit complex at 5622 Evers Road have dealt with a lack of hot water, unsafe stairways, water leaks, trash, roach infestations and crime,
The complex is “plagued with crime, deplorable living conditions and numerous city code violations, which constitute a threat to human health and safety,” the lawsuit states.Code violations dog large Leon Valley apartment complex; latest owner works through list of improvements The city has never before sued the owner of an apartment complex over code violations, City Manager Crystal Caldera said.
When inspectors visited the complex last week, they found that fixes had been made to some of the buildings but that there were “still quite a few violations,” Caldera said. Tenants have said they had to buy water to take baths — because the complex shut off the water — and use water from the pool to flush their toilets. They complained of mold, broken mailboxes, safety issues and a ceiling that collapsed due to a leak.A breakdown of key state and local races and candidates in the May 24 primary runoff.
Saterra Serna-Hewitt, who has lived at Vista del Rey for about two years, described mold, bugs and crime. She and her husband have three small children and worry about their safety, to the point that they recently discussed carrying a gun, she said.
