Hunter Dickinson runs the game inside. Jace Howard plays like a lottery pick when he’s on. Kobe Bufkin is one of the toughest one-on-one covers in the league.
For 15 minutes Sunday, the Hoosiers managed that trio successfully. Howard wasn’t allowed to shake loose. Bufkin found life difficult. Dickinson struggled with double teams.By the time Michigan pushed its lead past 10 points early in the second half, all three players were in double figures in scoring. Bufkin drove to the rim religiously. Howard’s 3s meant IU had to abandon its hard doubles on Dickinson.
The Hoosiers drew first blood, Trayce Jackson-Davis free throws following a Race Thompson hook shot to take a four-point lead. At the other end, renewed defensive effort kept the Wolverines scoreless across the first two minutes of the extra period, as IU's lead eventually crested at six. Dickinson answered Indiana's six-straight points to open overtime with a 3 of his own. Race Thompson might have sealed the game after he swiped the ball from Dickinson on an entry pass inside the final minute, but he missed both free throws.
Indiana opted to foul up three, Dug McDaniel made the first then intentionally missed the second, Thompson grabbing the rebound. He again missed both free throws, much to Assembly Hall's stress, but Bufkin, so good all afternoon, threw the ball away in transition and Michigan could not foul before the buzzer sounded.Follow IndyStar reporter Zach Osterman on Twitter: @ZachOsterman.
