Authorities say the teens rode together down a halfpipe at Copper Mountain Ski Resort when they were “launched off a large snowbank at the bottom.”
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colorado — Two Illinois teens sledding down a hill at a ski resort were killed when they went over a snowbank and came down hard on ice, authorities say.
The incident at Copper Mountain Ski Resort occurred at about 8:35 p.m. Sunday, a news release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office says. The release said the teens, ages 17 and 18, were visiting the resort during spring break. The two victims, identified as Dylan Bazzell and Drew Fehr, were seniors at Prairie Central High School in Fairbury, Ill., the school confirmed on Facebook. The Prairie Central School District’s superintendent, Paula Crane, says grief counseling is being offered to students.
“As we know, ‘it takes a village’ to raise a child, and it will take all of us working together to comfort and support our children through this tragic event,”The sheriff’s office says the teens rode together down a halfpipe when they were “launched off a large snowbank at the bottom.” The landing on hard ice below caused blunt-force trauma.that the two teens were on plastic sleds and a witness immediately called 911 to report the incident.
Emergency workers tried to revive the teens but they were pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office says.
