Illinois healthcare workers, educators and college students must be vaccinated against Covid-19 or get tested at least once a week, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Thursday, as lower vaccination rates in some parts of the state and the highly contagious Delta variant have led to rising numbers of coronavirus cases, straining hospitals.
The governor also reinstituted a statewide mandate requiring masks indoors beginning Monday, expanding a previous order requiring masks be worn in schools. “We have a tool in our hands that will save lives,” said Mr. Pritzker, a Democrat. “We are at a crossroads.” The seven-day average of newly reported Covid-19 cases in the state has tripled to 3,533, from 1,140 a month ago, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Though those figures remain well below a November high of 12,384, the recent increase has worried state officials.
Illinois Department of Public Health Director Ngozi Ezike said 220 people were being hospitalized each day with Covid-19—the highest level the state has seen since May. As of Wednesday night, 2,184 patients with Covid-19 filled Illinois hospital beds, with 489 in intensive-care units.
