How much relief would Californians see if there were any changes to the gas tax?
Severin Borenstein, a professor at UC Berkeley who specializes in energy, believes residents wouldn't be helped much by Newsom's original proposal to suspend the increase.
"Suspending the gas tax increase would be unnoticeable," he said."It'll be about 3 cents a gallon, and given that gas is over $5 dollars a gallon right now, most people won’t care about saving 3 cents a gallon.""That's a really bad idea," he said."Besides the fact that it pays for a lot of infrastructure, it also represents costs not included when we burn gas like local pollution, congestion on roads and the risk to pedestrians when we choose to drive.
Instead of changes to the gas tax, Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon have called for"substantial tax relief to families and small businesses as fast as possible," that does not include a"small cut to the gas tax that might not get passed on to consumers." Borenstein said he hopes that the policy takes the form of another round of stimulus checks that can be used on gasoline or other commodities seeing rising prices. On Thursday,the highest increase in the consumer prince index over a 12-month period since 1982.
"While gas prices are up for most Californians, they are not the biggest cost shock people have been facing over the last year when compared to rents, medical costs and utility bills, all of which have also gone up faster than inflation," he said."Rent and medical bills make up a larger share of people's budget than gas prices."
