An Idaho infant died of COVID-19 last month, marking the state’s first pediatric coronavirus death, officials said Tuesday.

The infant had not yet reached their first birthday, and was from the Southwest District Health region — an area that includes Adams, Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, and Washington counties. But the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare declined to release the baby’s name or any other details in an effort to protect the privacy of the baby’s grieving family.

About 260 children and youths under the age of 18 have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in Idaho since the pandemic began, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
