Hag reckons injuries robbed Gers of showing their true worth against Liverpool, Ajax and Napli last year.
Rangers’ punishing experience in the Champions League last season has many – including some of their own fans – believing the Europa League is their level.
He didn’t look pleased at having to settle for a half hour’s run-out as a substitute on Saturday as a Rangers side with eight changes stumbled past Morton in the Viaplay Cup. The fact that he came on and provoked exactly the kind of spark and creativity that had been sorely missing only underlined Hagi’s frustration and even if he tried to be diplomatic afterwards, the body language was a giveaway.
“There were 11 players on the football pitch today. Probably another 15 were unhappy they didn’t play. It’s not just me. Everybody wants to play football, especially when you’re at a club like this with the fans, Ibrox and everything. And the fact that Ibrox will be a pressure cooker tomorrow night only makes him more desperate to be involved. He insisted: “Look, wherever the pressure is, that’s where I am. I’m always going to look for pressure because that’s the adrenaline I need. That’s what gets me going and makes me wake up every morning.
“So hopefully we can do it again. I was lucky to play with Genk in the Champions League three or four seasons ago so I know the feeling. He has no doubts the elite Euro tournament is the one to be relished, even if the Europa League could be seen as the one where greater success is possible - a rationale backed by Rangers reaching the final the season before last. Losing all six Champions League games last season would appear to back up that argument, but not in Hagi’s opinion.
