Famed independent director Kevin Smith recently opened up regarding his past issues with mental health, trauma, and healing. Hiring his friends to save money on his self-financed first film, Smith's Clerks broke the young New Jersey native into Hollywood. He followed his black-and-white comedy with Mallrats, a box-office bomb that has since become a cult classic.
I felt disgusting, like I didn't matter. That's when "the other guy" started to appear. I decided to be entertaining and make people love me before they noticed I was fat. This was eye-opening to me because I'd always spent the majority of my time depressed about the past or anxious over the future. I'm really interested in seeing if I can finally be comfortable sitting by myself and just be alone with my thoughts.
Kevin Smith Left His Mark On Hollywood Inspired by Richard Linklater's low-budget independent film Slacker , Smith pursued his dream of becoming a filmmaker while staying grounded in his roots and being close to the people who supported him from the beginning. The Garden State provides the backdrop for the majority of the director's films, with many of his dear friends returning to star.
