In Iran, the legal age for marriage is thirteen for girls and fifteen for boys.
However, many child marriages in Iran are not registered, as they happen in rural areas and among tribal and impoverished families. In most cases, financially insecure, illiterate, or addict fathers marry off their daughters out of financial desperation.
Mina’s husband never held a steady job, and after his death, everything fell on her shoulders. Left alone with her husband’s poverty and heartbroken by her poor parents’ neglect, Mina had to learn to survive on her own while taking care of two young children. “I had to survive. I had no choice,” she says bluntly. “I had no one and my husband’s family also didn’t want me. His parents were too old, and his family’s financial situation was worse than my own.
While Mina did have opportunities to remarry, most of the men wanted her to make a terrible choice. “So many people told me to get married, but I didn’t want to rely on a man,” she says. “Sure, my life could have become better, but almost all the men who wanted to marry me were forcing me to choose between marrying them or keeping my boys.
Her older son, Bijan, who was in second grade at the time, would help his illiterate mother go through the job postings in the newspaper. One day, in between the black-and-white scribbles on the page, Mina saw an ad that would change her life forever.
