“All I did that day was clean my room. My shoes were still under my bed. I just sat there. I couldn’t move. My mom said to me, ‘We are leaving. We’re not coming back.’”
. Cindy says she was one of a handful of minority students at her elementary school. She recalled that the small group of minority students usually sat together during lunch and relied on each other for support. Other students teased her for being Mexican and because her thighs “were too thick,” she says; the constant bullying forced her to change schools three times within her elementary and middle school years.
“I’d ask my mom, ‘Can we go to Disneyland?’ or ‘Can we go visit my cousins in Mexico?’ and she’d say, ‘No — your sister can, but you can’t because you weren’t born here,’” Cindy said.
