Afrikana opened its doors on Curry Mile last month

Recently a video of Marvel actor Will Poulter berating the lack of Michelin stars for restaurants that specialise in African cuisine went viral. In the video, Poulter professed his love for food from different cultures and described the situation as an ‘oversight’.

The décor of Afrikana is impressive. A sleek and clean design with a heavy emphasis on the earthy tones of green, brown and yellow paying homage to the trees, soil and sun of the continent that the food is inspired by. On the walls of the stairs are murals of black women with flowers for afros and the music played certainly fits the aesthetic, with some of the latest afrobeats being played at an acceptable volume.

The main event - which was the Jammin’ Jambalya - was exemplary, even if the portions were quite small. The jollof rice was warm and spicy, rice cooked to perfection and just enough spice to appease both the chilli tolerant and intolerant. The prawns and chicken were a tad ordinary but they were only there to serve as a backing crew for the main star of the show, which was the jollof rice.

The Okra Fries were also a big highlight, deep fried in perhaps the crispiest batter I have ever tasted. The batter had remnants of KFC of old, perhaps a tad too salty for some, but for someone like me they were perfect.
