Sophie MorrisI’m looking at my brand-new coffee machine but I can’t stop thinking about chocolate. The machine is a sleek black and chrome number with a clear plastic carousel on top holding what looks exactly like. Even better, someone has gone to the trouble of unwrapping them for me.
In front of the ball dispenser is a retractable opening to the belly of the machine; open this, drop in a ball, move the side arm down. Press one of the illuminated buttons to choose a long or short coffee, and in under a minute you’ll have it in a cup. This is addressing a real problem: I’m shocked to learn that some pods can take up to 500 years to decompose, and we’re sending around 29,000 to landfill every year. This is from recent research by, which pinpoints plastic coffee pods as taking longer to decompose than other plastic waste like plastic bottles. In light of this, coffee balls without plastic pods are exciting.
Wilde joined CoffeeB in March 2021 from Nespresso Switzerland, where he was responsible for the company’s sustainability strategy and expanding its recycling scheme. Nespresso has offered a pod recycling service for a decade and last year launchedin the UK, which accepts used capsules from 13 brands via a Collect+ drop-off or, in nine local authorities, kerbside collection.
