The book came out in December 2018 as China was making international headlines for imprisoning more than a million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in reeducation camps to counter what it calls extremist ideologies. All those interviewed suspect China's involvement in the detentions. Most declined to give their full names out of fear they would be targeted again.
