A Saskatoon mother was surprised when school fees for her two high school children came to $750 this year.
Jennifer Gallays was surprised to see the cost of her children’s school fees this year. With one child in grade nine and the other in grade 12 in the Saskatoon Public School Division , Gallays said their fees came to a total of $750.“It’s a lot of money, and the thing that bothers me about it is this is a regular high school experience for both kids.
In a statement, the province said SPSD received an increase of $9.8 million in this year’s budget, and an additional $2.7 million on June 1 to address classroom complexity. The estimated allocation for enrolment pressures for SPSD is $5.3 million.school divisions have the responsibility of making programming decisions within their allocated budget to meet their local priorities and address the needs of their students.
“I understand that it’s so tight that the divisions are looking for ways to try and gain back some money just so that they can do regular programming. It’s just not a good situation for everybody,” Gallays said.“I know that their hands are tied and that they’ve been trying to advocate for more funding all the way along, and we’re watching programs being cut because they can’t be offered anymore.”
“Now school divisions have no choice but to stick families with the bill,” Love said. “When a lot of parents are having a hard enough time just buying groceries, many simply can’t afford higher lunchroom fees.”said the education sector would need a $400 million investment in order to bring the province back up to 2013 levels, when it led the country in per-student spending.
