The woman did not arrange for someone to care for her 27 cats, two dogs & turtle when she visited Pennsylvania and contracted COVID-19 and could not return last summer, her attorney said. An animal control officer later found all but two of the cats dead.

Kelly Kuliga was sentenced to spend 360 days in the Cuyahoga County jail on 20 counts of animal cruelty. Kuliga did not arrange for someone to care for her 27 cats, two dogs and turtle when she visited Pennsylvania and contracted COVID-19 and could not return last summer, her attorney said. An animal control officer later found all but two of the cats dead. The other animals were emaciated.

“This is horrific by any stretch of the imagination,” Russo said. “You knew it was wrong. You could have prevented it.” Kuliga began to shake and held a piece of paper over her face when she walked into the courtroom and saw a television camera. Kuliga lived at the home at the time but has since sold it. She had 27 cats, two dogs and a turtle in the home. She traveled to her hometown in Pennsylvania a week earlier, but she did not arrange for anyone to care for the animals.
