💬 'I feel guilty for resenting all this, but I do resent it, because I thought I'd done my time with the more mundane, knackering elements of child-rearing'
was my time to relax and enjoy a level of relative comfort and freedom. My children joked that I wouldn’t know how to sit still and watch TV all day, but that wasn’t the sort of retirement I had planned. I was lucky enough to have enough money to travel, to have adventures and go out with my friends for lunch, to volunteer for charities, to explore whatever I could while I had my health.
It seemed like an expectation, rather than a request. I was massively taken aback, because I hadn’t anticipated doinglike that each week, and the idea of Saturday mornings each week made my heart sink. I didn’t have the heart to say no – I do know that although they earn decently, childcare is expensive, especially for twins – so I said we could try it out and see how it went.
I also do babysitting at other times, and none of that includes fun days out or sleepovers. I had visions of reading the paper with a coffee, or having brunch with my art class friends, but instead I’m making boiled eggs and coaxing them to brush their teeth, struggling to run around after two extremely energetic toddlers. Nappies, and accidents, and tantrums – all of the chores.
