Of those surveyed, 90 per cent revealed they had reduced their spend on heating, 60 per cent have cut back on food and 56 per cent said they had reduced social outings, while 34 per cent said they had cut spending in all three areas. “Paying for the heating is very difficult as the bills are high, so I am not putting my gas on very much at all because it’s just so expensive,” she says.
“At the age of 59, I found out I wasn’t going to get my pension at 60 and had to wait until I was 66,” says Pauline who worked for more than 40 years, firstly at Royal Mail and then Swansea Council. “Everything has gone up and is so expensive. I used to buy a steak now and then, but I can’t afford that now and hardly eat meat.
