It’s a hot and bright spring day in a remote corner of Wiltshire, where dozens ofAmong them is the first cohort of Ukrainian military chaplains to have gone through their paces with their British counterparts.along the front line in UkraineWhile the chaplains also undertake much of the basic training received by Ukrainian troops, they will not be armed when they join the combat arena.
“The main aim is to provide spiritual support for and soldiers and military personnel. We have 10 chaplains training here in the UK now, and they will take up positions with our military when they return home. It is impossible to entirely understand such a mindset unless, you too, are dealing with a brutal invasion in your country. But it is easy to empathise and to be impressed, overwhelmed even, by the determination in the eyes of every Ukrainian here.and troops who will soon be on the battleground, there is a fierce resistance inside every one of them.
There is not getting away from the fact that some of them will die or receive life -injuries alongside the troops they are serving. “But it’s such a privilege to be learning that lesson from the Ukrainian chaplains. I feel like the gift is all mine.” These Ukrainian troops completed their training in Wiltshire at the end of May and are now deployed across more than 1,000 miles of the front line
“We are there to care for our soldiers,” says the 52-year-old Ukrainian Orthodox deacon. “To bury our soldiers and to help families to grieve their sons and daughters. These are the responsibilities of a chaplain.” They are also from every religion. While Ukrainian orthodoxy is the faith for most troops, the second largest group is represented by Muslims, while the third is from the Jewish community. All faiths are represented here in Wiltshire.
