Derek “Tank” Schottle dreams of competing in the 2022 Special Olympics, but wonders how proposed funding cuts might affect support for an organization that has been at the center of his life for the past 18 years.
Derek"Tank" Schottle competes in the state track meet as part of the 2015 Texas Special Olympics. The Special Olympian says his goal is to travel to Orlando to participate in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. It’s an international community, said Schottle, who began to take part in the Games when he was in seventh grade in Sugar Land, Tex., earning his nickname “Tank” as a defensive tackle on the football field. “We’re all humans just like everybody else,” he said. “We can do great things in this world. No matter what happens, we want to continue to bring love and joy to people around the world.”
Zeroing out federal support would not drain the organization’s budget. Its annual global revenue is about $429 million, according to a 2017 Reach Report. “It seems like every day, the Trump administration manages to stoop even lower,” wrote Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California. “Budgets are statements of values, and you’ve made yours crystal clear.”
No one ever said, hey let's go hurt Special Olympics. Until the @realDonaldTrump Administration came along. https://t.co/jjq2nzi9hM
