She's well loved by staff and customers
She might be small - less than 5ft - but you wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of Nottingham's oldest landlady Judith Birkett. Aged 87 and still going strong behind the bar of a Nottingham pub, she certainly has no plans to retire.
"I'm slightly incapacitated but I will not give in. I like people, young, old, decrepit, nasty-tempered, charming, anybody as long as they don't smell," she jokes with a wicked glint in her eye. "The secret to being a good landlady is charm, personality... I've perhaps got a personality but I haven't got the charm," says the divorced mother-of-four.
Judith came into the pub trade relatively late in life at the age of 47, in 1983, when she took over the lease of a country pub, The Willow Tree, at Barnby in the Willows, near Newark. A relative novice, up until that point she'd only pulled pints at the village hall in Hickling. The Castle passed from one pub company to another and at one point there were plans to demolish it and build flats, so Judith wanted out. She was planning to buy another house and modernise it but a stairlift put her off and she decided to buy a semi-derelict closed pub in Sneinton Road instead.
The pub's reasonably busy although beer prices are set up go up again. "Wages have just gone up, I won't mention gas and electric. I've just had a quote for solar panels for about £20,000 so they can get stuffed. I'm not going to be here long enough to get even a fraction of my money back," she says.
