Could a woman, say, become a member of the most exclusive racing club in the world? Nicole Havrda says that is the plan
For most of the time that I was flying around the ICAR complex outside Montreal, I kept quiet. That is partly because it is difficult to speak through a clenched jaw, but also, I didn’t want to distract the driver, Demi Chalkias. She seemed to have her hands full. In a literal sense, they were in red racing gloves, wrapped around the wheel of a Mercedes GT-53, but she had plenty to keep her busy: hitting the brakes hard, finding the right line for the turns, pounding the accelerator on the exit.
Nicole Havrda says that is the plan. The 16-year-old from Comox, B.C., was one of Chalkias’s partners on the endurance night race. She’s also in the middle of an intense training and testing program that should see her racing in Formula Three before this season is over and in the W Series, with its all-women grids, next year. Long term? “I want to be the first female full-time in Formula One,” she says.
Havrda says she started emailing driving schools and researching karting programs as soon as she got back to the hotel. “I just got my L,” she says, referring to her learner’s permit in British Columbia. This means she can drive, but only with one of her parents riding shotgun. “Insane,” says Havrda, sounding like a teenager again. “I can’t get over it. But the thing about meeting him was you realize that he’s a normal person. Obviously, he’s a world champion, but he’s a normal person just like the rest of us.”
She’s not wrong. Lewis Hamilton is far more intimidating behind the wheel of his Mercedes than he would be standing next to you.
