James Gunn explains how saying goodbye to the characters is the saddest part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 & addresses a possible return.
James Gunn explains that the saddest part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is saying goodbye to the characters, but he also seems to hint at a possible return in the future. Gunn has written and directed all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, an achievement that no other MCU director shares. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 caps the trilogy, as Gunn is now running DC with Peter Safran.
Screen Rant attended the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press conference, where Gunn shared his sadness about closing the book on these characters. Gunn also seemed to leave the door open for his return in the future, though not for a while to come. Check out Gunn's full quote below: SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT James Gunn: I'm going to miss the characters. That's the saddest part for me. I really, truly love these characters. I love all of them. I think there are certain ones that I have a special fondness for, especially Rocket. And the saddest part of all of this [is] I'm gonna see all these people again — they're all friends of mine — but I'm not gonna be writing the characters again. At least not in the near future.
Could James Gunn Return To The MCU In The Future? Guardians of the Galaxy was always designed as a trilogy, which means this final installment can bring the Guardians' story to a natural end. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will delve into Rocket's past, introduce the High Evolutionary, Adam Warlock, and explore the aftermath of Peter Quill losing Gamora. Each of the Guardians found a family and their place in the world after searching for most of their lives.
Gunn's future seems full given the slate of DC Universe projects he has already announced. And while it may not be likely or anytime soon, the fact that Gunn seems open to returning could mean exciting possibilities for the MCU's future. Guardians of the Galaxy established this corner of the MCU's cosmic story, and while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will bring an end to the trilogy, it may not be the end of Gunn's version of these characters after all.
